Paleo Diet Guide
What is the Paleo Diet?
The Paleo Diet is based on the nutritional intake of our hunter-gather ancestors who existed during the Paleolithic Era. This era occurred around 2.5 million years ago and ended around 10,000 years ago with onset of the agricultural revolution. The theory behind the diet is that our genes are not well-adapted to the modern-day diet which is based on farmed foods like grains and legumes as well as dairy from domesticated livestock. It is thought that this maladaptation has contributed to the increased frequency and severity of several chronic diseases, including heart disease and diabetes.
Today’s Paleo Diet is composed of vegetables, whole fruits, eggs, wild-caught meat, wild-caught fish, healthy oils (including from animal fats, olives, avocados, and coconut), nuts, and seeds. It avoids all processed foods, as well as other foods that are covered in this guide. Overall, it is considered a high protein, low glycemic diet.
