GAPS Diet Guide
What is the GAPS Diet?
GAPS stands for Gut and Psychology Syndrome and acknowledges the connection between gut health and brain health. A guiding principle of the GAPS diet is the important role of the gut microbiome in human health as well as the risks of “leaky gut” (also known as increased intestinal permeability) in psychological conditions as well as autoimmune diseases. The diet was originally developed for children who suffered from neurological and/or psychological disease but has since been adopted by adults.
It is a restrictive diet that eliminates pasteurized dairy, sugar, grains, starchy vegetables, and refined carbohydrates while supplying nutrient-rich foods. Specifically, the following foods are emphasized: eggs, meats, stock, fish, shellfish, fresh vegetables and fruit, nuts and seeds, garlic, and olive oil.
Individualized nutrient supplementation, detoxification, and lifestyle changes are also encouraged during this diet. There are two phases to the diet, including an Introduction Diet and the Full GAPS Diet.
