FODMAP Diet Guide

What is the FODMAP Diet?

FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols. These are types of carbohydrates that can be difficult to digest for some people and lead to GI symptoms like gas, bloating, constipation, and/or diarrhea. The FODMAP diet categorizes foods as High FODMAP or Low FODMAP. A High FODMAP food contains a higher concentration of fermentable carbohydrates that a person’s gut bacteria can “feed on” or ferment, ultimately leading to GI symptoms. For instance, wheat products, lactose, and sugar alcohols are included in the High FODMAP group. Following a Low FODMAP diet for a determined amount of time reduces the intake of irritating, bothersome foods, providing symptomatic relief while allowing the gut to rest and restore.
